Advice for Candidates
You only get one chance to make a first impression. And first impressions last.
An interview is not just an opportunity for a company to ask you questions. An interview is also the time when you can decide if you like the company and ask any questions about the position you have applied for. The interview is as much for you as it is for them.
- Be prepared
- Find out as much as you can about the company before you go by looking at the website. Also you can benefit by preparing emotionally, something that gets blood flowing to the brain e.g. exercise, singing, stretching etc.
- Body Language
- Open posture, sit comfortably. Be alert and attentive. Dress appropriately for the interview and make sure you’re comfortable. Maintain eye contact. Shake hands firmly
How many people are within the team? What are they like?
Who would I be reporting to?
Is there any training provided?
In what way is performance measured and reviewed?
Unless prompted, we would recommend that you do not ask questions about salary.
- Questions you may be asked - Before answering questions, consider the following:
-
The culture of the organisation.
-
The employer wants to see your goals are in line with the company.
-
Consider how you can display your skills and experience in a positive light. They are looking for someone to fit in with the existing ethos of the company.
-
Concentrate on the employers needs.
-
What are your strengths & weaknesses?
-
What achievement are you most proud of?
-
What do you like doing out of work?
-
What aspects of your last job did you enjoy/dislike?
-
Why did you, or are you looking to leave?
Don't forget to listen! Don't interrupt. Appear interested in what is being said.
When it comes to talking during an interview, sometimes less is more. Ideally the interview should be a give and take situation, with you asking questions and when it’s your turn to speak, keep it concise and to the point. Nerves may cause you to feel like you have to keep talking – Don’t!!
In summary:
Prepare well beforehand
Read everything you can about the process and what person they are looking for.
Anticipate the questions you are likely to get and practice the answer in front of a friend.
Good Luck!!
